ACSR or AAAC: choosing overhead conductor for Nigerian networks

Both are aluminium overhead conductors and they are not interchangeable. The deciding factors are span, corrosion and what your existing hardware was designed for.

Overhead conductor decisions get made on price per metre more often than they should, and the two most common aluminium options behave quite differently in service.

What they are

ACSR is aluminium conductor steel reinforced. Aluminium strands carry the current, a steel core carries the mechanical load. The steel gives it high tensile strength, which means longer spans and better sag behaviour under load and wind.

AAAC is all aluminium alloy conductor. No steel core. The alloy itself provides strength, so the whole cross section carries current and the conductor is lighter for the same rating.

Where each one wins

Choose ACSR where spans are long, where the line crosses obstacles, or where mechanical loading is the governing constraint. It is also the more established choice on many existing Nigerian distribution networks, which matters for hardware compatibility.

Choose AAAC where corrosion is the problem. In coastal and high humidity environments, and anywhere with industrial atmosphere, the steel core in ACSR is the part that fails first. Salt laden air reaches the core, corrosion starts, and the conductor loses strength from the inside where nobody can see it. Port Harcourt, Lagos coastal areas and the Niger Delta are exactly this environment.

AAAC is also lighter for a given rating, which can reduce structure loading on a rebuild.

The mistake that costs the most

Mixing conductor types on a network without accounting for it. Different conductors have different sag characteristics, different thermal behaviour and different fitting requirements. Clamps and joints designed for one are not always correct for the other, and a joint that is nearly right is a hot spot waiting to happen.

If you are extending an existing line, match what is there or plan the transition properly at a structure designed for it.
